Akash Madhwal engineered Mumbai Indians’ 81-run all-around victory over Lucknow Super Giants in the 2023 IPL Eliminator on Wednesday, posting an astonishing 5-for-5 in 3.3 overs. Madhwal, who worked as an engineer and played tennis ball cricket just a few years ago, has now entered the IPL history books with his tally against LSG. He now he holds the record for the cheapest figures in the history of the IPL playoffs. During celebrations in the MI locker room, Madhwal received the match ball and smiled after receiving the souvenir.
With Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer injured, the previously unknown Madhwal has seized his chance to shine.
He joined Mumbai last year as an injury replacement but was limited to playing practice matches, before skipper Rohit Sharma introduced him to the big stage this season.
“The team has given me the responsibility, so I’m trying to do it,” Madhwal told reporters after his man of the match performance.
“It’s not that I can take his (Bumrah’s) place, but whatever I can do in my capacity, I’m doing.”
“Cricket is my passion and not a burden,” he said. “So I enjoy cricket after leaving engineering and a job to follow my passion without having much at home.”
Their feat on Wednesday came with a 4-37 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, dwarfed only by Mumbai big-buyer Cameron Green’s 100-winner not out.
MI will now face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 on Friday, with the winner of the match facing Chennai Super Kings in the final on Sunday.
