US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was shouted at and faced a partly hostile crowd during a town hall Friday where some participants were upset by the socialist Democrat lawmaker’s positions on Ukraine immigration funding and the debt limit.
Speaking to voters in Corona, Queens, the “Squad” member was interrupted multiple times as she was heckled and booed by some, and in turn, her supporters yelled at protesters.
“American citizens before immigrants,” a man yelled as he walked toward Ocasio-Cortez carrying small American flags. “Where are you on the immigrant issue? You’re a piece of s**t.”

The man also repeated a discredited claim that military veterans were being kicked out of New York City hotels to make room for immigrants. A man who claimed to be an Iraq War veteran tried to calm the crowd in support of the congresswoman.
“Immigrants have nothing to do with vets,” the man said, holding up a microphone after Ocasio-Cortez allowed him to speak. “We all go through Ellis Island. Things are different. Things change over time.”
During a discussion about the June 5 debt default deadline, Ocasio-Cortez stated that she thinks the Biden administration should remove the debt limit. She has claimed that if the cap is not raised, massive chaos would ensue in the US economy.
“I hate that the Republicans passed a $1.7 trillion tax cut for the richest people in this country,” he said at one point.
The protesters pointed out that the United States has provided billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine. The Biden administration has provided Ukraine with nearly $40 billion in military aid since Russia invaded in late February 2022.
