The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has issued a notice to the Delhi Police requesting FIR registration against those who trolled, abused and threatened to rape and assault the sister of cricketer Shubman Gill, authorities said on Wednesday. Gill’s ton in Gujarat Titan’s last IPL league stage match knocked out Royal Challengers Bangalore from the tournament. After the game, Gill and his sister were mocked and abused by some on various social media platforms.
DCW’s notice stated: “These posts on the social media platform ‘Twitter’ and ‘Instagram’ are obscene, misogynistic, threatening and extremely abusive towards Shubman Gill’s sister. She is also being threatened with rape and assault on social media , which is clearly a criminal act.” This is a very serious matter and calls for urgent action, he added.
On Twitter, DCW chief Swati Maliwal shared the notice and asked the police to send a detailed report of the measures taken by May 26.
“Aware of suo-moto’s online trolling and abuse of cricketer’s sister #ShubmanGill, we have issued a notice to the Delhi Police requesting FIR registration. Police are to submit a detailed report of the measures taken before May 26. Such criminals will not be allowed to get away with it,” he tweeted.
Through its notice, the DCW has requested a copy of the FIR on file in the matter, details of the defendants identified and arrested. In case there was no arrest, the women’s rights body has sought details of the steps taken by the police to make the arrests.
