Xtra Time Web Desk: Gujarat Titans batsman Shubman Gill said on Friday that his 129 runs in IPL 2023 Qualifier 2 against the Mumbai Indians is his best IPL run so far. Gill worked his way to a scintillating hundred off just 49 balls.
“I think this was probably my best entry so far in the IPL,” Shubman said while speaking at the post-match launch ceremony.
Since the last WI tour I think I have changed gears, I got injured before the last IPL but I have been working on my game. I worked on some areas and made technical changes before the New Zealand series after the T20I World Cup.
It was the third hundred for Shubman in the last 4 matches of the current IPL season. The previous two tons of him came against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Speaking of his shot, Shubman said: “For me, it’s playing ball for ball, over and over again. The over where I got to three sixes gave me the momentum to go big. That’s when I realized it could be my day. It was also a good hitting ground.”
Shubman hit his hundred in just 49 balls which included 8 sixes and 4 fours. In doing so, he joined Virat Kohli (4 tonnes for Royal Challengers Bangalore, 2016) and Jos Buttler (4 tonnes for Rajasthan Royals, 2022) who have netted more tonnes than Gill in a single edition of the IPL.
“You keep inventing as a hitter but for me the belief is more important. I also come from a good international season. I had a good season last time too. When I start well, I feel confident that I can score well,” Shubman said.
He added: “Expectations are something that follows you off the ropes, but once you step on the field, it’s about trying to contribute to the team.”
Shubman currently has 851 runs in IPL 2023. Only Virat Kohli (973, RCB, 2016) and Jos Buttler (863, RR, 2022) have scored more runs than him in a single season.
