Lewis Dodd’s goal just 26 seconds off the golden point in extra time saw St Helens snatch a thrilling 13-12 win over Leeds Rhinos in their Betfred Super League clash.
Tryes from Ash Handley and Cameron Smith helped the Rhinos take a 12-4 halftime lead at Headingley, with Tommy Makinson answering for the visitors with a try in his 300th appearance for the Saints.
Leeds weren’t helped by losing Aidan Sezer, Morgan Gannon and Harry Newman to injuries before half-time, and a converted try from Curtis Sironen and a Makinson penalty goal leveled Saints before the home side sent off James McDonnell for hit late.
Tempers flare in Leeds Rhinos’ game against St Helens in the dying moments of regulation, with James McDonnell receiving a red card for throwing a punch.
Neither team could conjure up a winner in regulation time and both had numerous one-point attempts before Dodd, who kicked the crucial goal in Saints’ World Club Challenge’s win over Penrith Panthers, finally got the winning score just as the match seemed headed for a draw.
The match was part of a doubleheader that earlier in the evening saw two tries each from Emily Rudge and Shona Hoyle to help the Saints women secure a 32-18 win over the Rhinos in the Betfred Women’s Super League.
