New Delhi, The Congress on Friday claimed that there is no documentary evidence to prove that Lord Mountbatten, C Rajagopalachari and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru handed over the ‘scepter’ (Sengol) to India from the British rule. The symbol to be transferred has been mentioned.
Party General Secretary Jairam Ramesh also claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his henchmen were using this ceremonial ‘scepter’ for political purposes in Tamil Nadu. The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday alleged that the Congress had kept the sacred ‘scepter’ gifted to former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru as a ‘golden rod’ and kept it in a museum, disregarding Hindu traditions. This historical ‘Scepter’ made of silver and covered with gold will be installed near the seat of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha in the new Parliament House on May 28.
The new Parliament House will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the same day. Ramesh tweeted, “Is it any wonder that the new Parliament House is being decorated with fake WhatsApp University discourses? BJP/RSS’s distortion of history stands exposed once again with ‘Maximum Claims, Minimum Evidence’.
He said, “The scepter was conceived by a religious establishment in the then Madras and was crafted in the city of Madras. It was presented to Jawaharlal Nehru in August 1945. He claimed that there is no documentary evidence that Lord Mountbatten, C Rajagopalachari and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru described the ‘scepter’ as a symbol of the transfer of power to India by the British.
