“It was crazy because when I was reading the script, I thought, ‘No, this can’t happen!’ and then I said, ‘No, I survive,'” Sophie Thatcher told /Film. “I knew something was going to happen, and I thought, ‘Natalie is going to get out of this.'”
teen natalia does get out of being eaten, which isn’t a surprise given that we know she survives to become the adult Natalie. However, the scene where she first chooses the Queen of Hearts is intense and emotional, and Thatcher went on to describe her character’s state of mind:
“At that point, she accepts that acceptance as well, and I think she’s so emotionally drained and out of it and has experienced the worst things a human being can experience. At that point, she’ll sacrifice herself and go give herself to her comrades. It was also the terror of thinking that if she tried to do something or get out of it, they would come after her.”
Although Natalie has accepted her fate, Travis (Kevin Alves) steps in and tells her to run. “Thank goodness for Travis,” Thatcher added with a smile. “He saved Natalie.”
Unfortunately, Travis saving Natalie ultimately leads to the death of his younger brother, Javi (Luciano Leroux), after Natalie and the girls who were chasing her left the boy to drown after he fell through the ice. The desert chose, and Natalie survives, albeit with the guilt of letting Javi die, something that stays with her until the moment of her own death in the season 2 finale.
