Sotheby’s is outrageous about this! They are selling the bed that Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward had (and used) in their sex room.
Are you buying The ‘F**k Hut’?
The bed that Newman wrote about in his memoirs is available thanks to the private auction house. His latest collection is called “A Life & Legacy: The Joanne Woodward & Paul Newman Collection”.
In case you have no idea why the bed is so important, Newman had this to say about it in his memoir, published posthumously in 2022. He and his wife, Woodward, shared a “F**k Hut,” a place that she created in her home only for them to procreate in it.
His wife surprised him with the room when she returned home to Beverly Hills after working on a movie. “’I call it the F**k Hut,’ she said proudly,” Newman recalled in his book. “It had been done with such love and delight. Even if my kids came over, we would go to the F**k Hut several nights a week and just be intimate and loud and raunchy.
What was in the room?
The main feature of the room was, of course, the bed. a “thrift store double bed” with a brass frame. The actual mattress isn’t for sale, thank goodness, but that brass frame is up for grabs, and Sotheby’s is confident in its ability to withstand a lot of “moving,” even after all these years.
The auction doesn’t start until May 31, but the opening bid price for the bed has already gone up and looks set to start at $1,000.
The description of the bed on Sotheby’s website states: “Joanne found and bought this seemingly ordinary double bed at a thrift store, and kept it at the Newman home.” They describe it as “painted cast iron and brass bed frame from the couple’s notorious F**k Hut”.
Sex books that the couple kept in the bedroom are also for sale, seven erotica-based titles to be exact. The couple acquired them throughout the 1960s after getting married. Titles include: “The Joy of Sex,” “The Complete Book of Erotic Art, Volumes 1 and 2,” and “The Vatsyayana Kama Sutra.”
Paul Newman detailed his sex
Selling the bed is quite interesting but knowing what happened to it before the purchase is… not usual. “The girls thought it was a joke,” but that changed after meeting his wife. “Joanne gave birth to a sexual creature,” Newman wrote. “We left a trail of lust all over the place. Hotels and public parks and Hertz Rent-A-Cars”.
But mostly, in that bed and supposedly for days on end. So if he has $1,000, he can own the bed frame that was the center point of Newman and Woodward’s marriage. The actor passed away in 2008 and Woodward is still alive and 93 years old! They were married for 50 years and most of the items up for auction come from their family home in Westport, Connecticut. They lived there for most of their marriage.
Newman wrote of their marriage and the time they spent together in that house:
“There was a glue that held us together then, and for the rest of our lives together. And that glue was this: Everything seemed possible. The good, the bad and the wonderful. With everyone else, some things were possible, but not everything. For us, the promise of it all was there from the beginning.”
