Stevie Nicks is thanking Taylor Swift for helping her grieve her friend.
While the Fleetwood Mac singer has been paying tribute at her shows to her late friend and bandmate Christine McVie, who died in November, she made special mention of Swift and a particular piece from the singer’s Midnights album during the concert. Monday in Atlanta.
“Thank you to Taylor Swift for doing me a favor, and that is writing a song called ‘You’re On Your Own, Kid.'” nicks said. “That is the sadness of how I feel. While Chris was, even on the other side of the world, we didn’t have to talk on the phone.”
“We weren’t really phone friends,” he continued. “Then we’d go back to Fleetwood Mac, go in and say, ‘Little sis, how are you?’ It was like there had never been a minute, never an argument in all our 47 years, never.”
“So when it was just the two of us, we were both alone, kids, we always were,” Nicks continued. “And now, I have to learn to be alone, boy, alone. So, you helped me do that. Thank you.”
Nicks and McVie had been close friends for nearly half a century when McVie died at age 79 of a stroke and metastatic cancer. The band posted a heartfelt tribute within hours describing McVie as “one of a kind, special and talented beyond measure.”
Since then, Nicks has taken care of a series of tour dates across the United States. Yet the grieving Landslide singer was so moved by Swift’s latest work and the lyrics to You’re on Your Own, Kid that she was able to grieve her friend more through the music.
“Because there were pages turned with the bridges burned, all you lose is one step you take,” Swift sings in the piece. “So, make friendship bracelets, seize the moment and try it out. You don’t have to be afraid, you’re on your own, boy.
In an interview with The New Yorker last year, Nicks recalled a conversation from about 10 years ago in which Perry told him, “Well, there’s the Taylor Swift army and there’s the Katy army, and she’s like….'”
Nicks continued: “And I was like, ‘That’s just bullshit. You have to get away from it. Don’t carry that on your mind.’”
Nicks’ power is such that, a few years later, Perry sent Swift a literal olive branch.
“Thank you, Katy,” Swift reportedly posted to her Instagram story at the time. “So I got to my dressing room and I found this real olive branch. This means too much to me.”
On Monday, Nicks sent the same words to Swift: “Thank you.”
